Community Gardens to host Spring Starter Seedling Sale April 21

FINDLAY, OH (PRESS RELEASE) – The Community Gardens of Hancock County will be hosting a spring starter seedling sale on Sat., April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at the garden locations, 1800 N. Blanchard St. Seedlings of tomato, pepper, squash, lettuce, broccoli, onion, carrot, peas and more, will be available for donation. A free Bald Cypress tree sapling will be available for the first 250 guests. The seeds for the starter seedlings have been donated by Dollarseed.com and Jon Hart of MENTOR Initiative. The event is open to the public.  Coffee and doughnuts will be served. Funds raised at the seedling sale will be used for supplies, fertilizer, fuel for equipment and other garden expenses.

Canning Fruits & Vegetables will be the topic of the Food Preservation Workshop held on July 27. It will be held at the Hancock County Agricultural Service Center, 7868 CR 140, Findlay. The session will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. or 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Plan to join Extension Educator Barbara Brahm for this newly developed Food Preservation Series.  This session will bring the latest food research to home food preservation methods.  Whether you are a novice or have years of experience, you can catch up on the latest information and products available.

Gardeners and other lovers of fresh produce are often interested in extending the season’s bounty by learning more about home-preserving fruits and vegetables. Now they can, by attending a “Drying & Canning Specialty Products Workshop” presented by Ohio State University Extension, Thursday, July 14, at the Hancock County Agriculture Service Center, 7868 CR 140, Findlay. Classes will be offered from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and repeated from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

The workshop focuses on the basics of drying and home canning of specialty products (salsa, jams & jellies, pickles, etc.) and is appropriate for people with all levels of experience, said Barbara Brahm, Extension Educator.
